Optical Spectroscopy of Galactic Cirrus Clouds: Extended Red Emission in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium
نویسنده
چکیده
We present initial results from the first optical spectroscopic survey of high latitude Galactic cirrus clouds. The observed shape of the cirrus spectrum does not agree with that of scattered ambient Galactic starlight. This mismatch can be explained by the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the diffuse interstellar medium, as found in many other astronomical objects, probably caused by photoluminescence of hydrocarbons. The integrated ERE intensity, IERE ≈ 1.2×10 −5 erg s cm sr, is roughly a third of the scattered light intensity, consistent with recent color measurements of diffuse Galactic light. The peak of the cirrus ERE (λ0 ∼ 6000 Å) is shifted towards short (bluer) wavelengths compared to the ERE in sources excited by intense ultraviolet radiation, such as Hii regions (λ0 ∼ 8000 Å); such a trend is seen in laboratory experiments on hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. Extinction Curves, Distances, and Clumpiness of Diffuse Interstellar Dust Clouds
We present CCD photometry in UBV RI of several thousand Galactic field stars in four large (> 1 degree) regions centered on diffuse interstellar dust clouds, commonly referred to as “cirrus” clouds (with optical depth AV less than unity). Our goal in studying these stars is to investigate the properties of the cirrus clouds. A comparison of the observed stellar surface density between on-cloud ...

Several of the current and next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments have polarimetric capability, promising to add to the finesse of precision cosmology. One of the contaminating Galactic foregrounds is thermal emission by dust. Since optical interstellar polarization is commonly seen, from differential extinction by aligned aspherical dust particles, it is expected that th...

We present submillimeter observations between 200 and 600μm obtained with the French balloon-borne instrument SPM/PRONAOS toward the high latitude cirrus cloud MCLD123.5 + 24.9 in the Polaris Flare. These sensitive measurements allow for the first time to study in details the submillimeter dust emission of cirruses at the arc minute scale. The extended cirrus as well as a compact condensation a...
متن کاملExtended Red Emission in High-Galactic Latitude Interstellar Clouds
Nearby interstellar clouds at high Galactic latitudes are ideal objects in which the interaction of interstellar dust with photons from the well-characterized interstellar radiation field can be studied. Scattering and UV-excited photoluminescence at optical wavelengths as well as thermal emission at midand far-infrared wavelengths are observable manifestations of such interactions. Here we rep...

We present an analysis of far-infrared dust emission from diffuse cirrus clouds. This study is based on serendipitous observations at 160μm at high galactic latitude with the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope by the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). These observations are complemented with IRIS data at 100 and 60μm and constitute one of the m...
